9/11 Memorial Museum To Set Aside “Disturbing Exhibits”

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

This year, on the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the 9/11 memorial will be unveiled to the public.

In two years, on the 11th anniversary of the attack, the 9/11 memorial museum is set to open its doors. And according to Reuters, the museum directors are already being faced with the challenge of telling the story without disturbing the visitors.

According to Alice Greenwald, museum director, the most potentially disturbing exhibits are going to be placed away from the main space in “special alcoves.” That way, visitors to the museum can choose for themselves whether or not they want to view some of the more disturbing images and artifacts from the day.

It’s definitely and interesting decision. Just look at the name: 9/11 Memorial Museum. It’s part memorial, part museum. The balance between displaying history and honoring the victims is a delicate one.

“We’re not just a history museum, we’re also a memorial institution and so the tension that happens between commemoration and documentation is a flash point,” Greenwald said.

As we approach the seventh anniversary of the catastrophic events of September 11th, 2001, America looks back and remembers, but also looks ahead. While that day will never be forgotten, the construction of the Freedom Tower signifies the “enduring spirit of freedom” that America embodies now, embodied seven years ago, and will embody forever. Standing 1,776 feet tall in honor of the year the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Freedom Tower is expected to be complete by 2012.
