Memorial & Museum Backs “Make History” Site

Thousands of people have and will visit New York in order to reflect on the September 11th attacks. Not everyone can make such a journey, however, and so the National September 11th Memorial & Museum, along with Google and a design firm called Local Projects, has unveiled a special website.

Make History is, as the homepage explains, “a collective telling of the events of 9/11 through the eyes of those who experienced it, both at the attack sites and around the world.”

The idea is that people can type up a statement about what they saw or felt on September 11th, and attach relevant photographs and video clips. Then, they can mark their physical location at that point in history on a map, and Google will piece together their point of view with the standard perspective offered by its Street View software.

It’s easy to either contribute or browse (or do both) on Make History, which is important since the site isn’t geared towards a technical audience. An added bonus is that Google, not some fly-by-night company, is involved, so there’s little concern that everything will disappear following a bankruptcy or crash due to incompetence.

Make History is up and running at full speed right now.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
