Port Authority Gives Construction Update

Approximately one year ago, the Port Authority took a step back and reassessed the deadlines associated with the World Trade Center project.  Now, the PA’s reporting on the amount of progress it’s made in the intervening months, and some of the figures may bring a smile to your face.

With regards to the Freedom Tower (or One World Trade Center, as the Port Authority prefers), it seems that 22,000 cubic yards of concrete – or “the equivalent of more than 100 miles of New York City sidewalks” – have been poured, according to an official statement.

Also, the PA’s “[i]nstalled approximately 700 tons of steel for the tower’s substructure, equivalent to the weight of 2 Statues of Liberty,” and brought the tower’s core to a height of 200 feet above street level.

As for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, 20,000 cubic yards of concrete have been poured, 65 percent of the steel has been put in place, and 35,000 linear feet of conduit have been installed for the electrical service.

The World Trade Center Transportation Hub is coming along, too, with about 252,000 cubic yards of material having been excavated.  And six of 28 concrete panels that will comprise the Vehicle Security Center’s foundation are in place.

Not bad, all in all.

It will be a great thing to see upon my return to NY after a 12 month rotation in Iraq. It will give me a great feeling of satisfaction to see results on what was still a big hole in the ground when I first left NY in Oct. of 07 to re-enter the military. Good Job guys. I know once a couple of my buddies hear about this they will be pretty satisfied as well.
