Memorial & Museum Reaches Acquisition Stage

In what has to be a good sign with regards to completion dates, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum is trying to nail down a lot of details.  Families and friends of 9/11 victims have been asked to check the spelling of their loved ones’ names and contribute things for the sake of an exhibit.

9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels explained in a statement, “We are asking those who knew these individuals best - their family, friends, and colleagues - to help ensure that the memory of each person is preserved through the Memorial Exhibition.  Objects, photographs, recorded memories and text will create moving portraits that celebrate each individual life and allow visitors to relate to those who died.”

And indeed, actual movement may be involved.  As things stand now, the 9/11 Living Memorial is intended to be “an interactive, digitized, and searchable database.”  This should help make a huge amount of information available from relatively small stations, whereas more traditional displays could only present a few details.

The Memorial & Museum isn’t making a mission of conserving space, though, as a “Wall of Faces” should display photographs of the almost 3,000 people who died.

9/11 Memorial Museum Director Alice M. Greenwald said, “The thousands of faces and memories demonstrate the impact of terrorism on individuals, families and communities.  The exhibition clearly shows that terrorism is not an abstraction, reinforcing a core message of the Memorial Museum - that the indefensible acts of terrorism affect real people.”
