Janno Lieber, the president of the World Trade Center Properties, has given his opinion with regards to the latest goings-on. As the Port Authority and Silverstein Properties argue back and forth regarding who’s at fault for the various problems and delays, Lieber mostly came down on Silverstein’s side.
“[T]he Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s ability to complete the World Trade Center memorial is not in any way dependent on Silverstein Properties,” he wrote in a letter to the editor of the New York Times.
“Second, it was the Port Authority - not Silverstein - that initiated a renegotiation of the 2006 agreement when it admitted that it is years behind on its commitments to complete critical site infrastructure.”
Lieber also said that Silverstein isn’t asking for any money from the Port Authority, which contradicts some rumors and reports that were in circulation.
This isn’t exactly a development that seems liable to help the construction process; it’s hard to see how it heals any rifts. Still, there’s a slim possibility that assigning blame will bring about an end to all of the quarrelling, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that outcome.
