Freedom Tower Deck Decision Process Starts

The 102nd floor of the Freedom Tower will play host to an observation deck, and the Port Authority has begun its search for an operator.  Don’t expect a hasty choice; the decision process isn’t supposed to be finished until early next year.

Situated 1,300 feet above street level, the new deck will be at roughly the same height as the one that used to rest upon Two World Trade Center.  It will, unfortunately, be much smaller - an area of 18,000 square feet doesn’t compare favorably to 44,000 square feet.

Still, interest in the new observation deck seems high.  Also, in regards to the levels just beneath it, the New York Sun reports, “The Port Authority already sent out a request for proposals for restaurants that would exist on the 100th and 101st floors of the Freedom Tower, and said it has received 11 responses.”

So the top of the structure is shaping up nicely as a whole.

The observation deck should open in 2012, likely in step with the rest of the Freedom Tower.
