Pit Construction Approaching Ground Level
The least inspiring part of any construction project has to be the one in which all progress takes place below ground level. Fortunately, it shouldn’t be much longer until the Freedom Tower’s beginnings rise above that point.
“We expect it to reach past street level in a few months,” said Port Authority Executive Director Anthony Shorris to Tom Topousis. Since the bottom of an 80-foot pit marks construction’s absolute low point, this will represent an impressive amount of progress.
Also, Topousis reports, “Just to clear sites for Silverstein’s three towers, the Port Authority excavated and hauled out enough dirt and rock to fill Giants Stadium.”
Once the foundation-level work is finished, things should start to move more quickly. It’s always good to remember that the project’s completion dates haven’t been changed, and before long, we’ll be able to actually keep an eye on things.
