Important Step: “Freedom” Column Covered

Some steel here, some concrete there . . .  Progress is being made at a regular pace, but one of the most noteworthy changes involves the recent covering of a decorated column.  The word “freedom” and an American flag decal are now enclosed in plywood.

This change is an expected part of the Freedom Tower’s creation, and nothing to be concerned about.  A layer of concrete will follow at some point.

Still, the covering isn’t insignificant.  David W. Dunlap writes, “The disappearance of the name ‘Freedom Tower,’ which was Governor Pataki’s coinage, sometimes seems to be more than just a byproduct of construction.  The building is increasingly referred to in official documents as 1 World Trade Center.”

In a statement last week, even Pataki himself seemed to wobble a bit between terms.  And the same sort of shift appears to be taking place on blogs and forums all over the Web.

At any rate, construction of the building continues.
