Fresh WTC Building Details Released

September 12, 2007 - More details regarding the future of the World Trade Center site have been released, and some of the subtle touches have drawn applause.  There’s also word that architects are feeling much better about the design of the Freedom Tower and its surrounding structures.

Both developments should be considered encouraging; problems in the project’s past have, at times, caused onlookers to worry.  Alex Appelbaum reports that future onlookers will be treated to some impressive sights, however.  “They include a granite wall in the Maki building’s lobby, whose reflective surface will catch light from the pools at the September 11 memorial nearby,” he writes.

Additionally, “designers enlarged its lobby from a double-height volume to one that will be triple-height; they also moved lower-floor elevators to the building’s exterior ‘to make them scenic,’” Appelbaum continues in an article for WTC.com.  “And the memorial, planners revealed, will include two tridents from the original Trade Center lobby in its entrance hall.”

Some of these details - particularly the first and last - have helped win over critics.  And since construction is already under way, these details, unlike the earliest Freedom Tower plans, are not likely to be changed or abandoned.

There remains a lot more to find out, though, before we arrive at the completion dates of the different buildings.

Is there any information on who is supplying all of the steel or building supplies for the project? I would very much appreciate a response. Thank you

I love the proposed look of the new World Trade Center. I’m glad construction is finally getting underway. What I’m not thrilled about is the name: “Freedom Tower”. I believe it has been referred to as “Orwellian” by someone. I could not agree more. Can we please change the name? It doesn’t do the architecture justice.
